Basel is the starting point of this round tour trough Switzerland. You can arrive here via one of the night trains or one of the many ICE connections throughout Germany. Watch out on which station you are standing, Basel as 2 stations. Basel SBB and Basel Bad Bf where the first is the Main station and the second the end station of Germany in Basel where some pass trough towards Basel SBB and some stop. Scenic points are of course the Altstadt and the Rhine passing trough. From here you can take the ICN towards Biel/Bienne via Delémont. For the best experience choose for this route over the route via Olten since it is much more scenic!

Change for IC or ICN trains towards Geneve-Aeroport via Yverdon-les-Bains.

Geneva is a must see in Switzerland, have a walk around in this Touristic friendly city around Lake Geneva. I can advise downloading the official City Guide Geneva from the Touristic office for a free city guide and offline map with most important sights. You can walk around this city within one day. Continue at the and of the afternoon towards Lausanne with one of the many connecting trains.

Get an overnight sleep in Lausanne. You can take the Metro line 2 down towards Lake Geneva and have a relaxing walk here. The old town center uphill is as well interesting. Take the next morning one of the many train towards Montreux.

You always have to change trains here between the MOB and BLS.

Change at Interlaken Ost towards Lauterbrunnen for the "Berner Oberland-Bahn" which is NOT INCLUDED IN INTERRAIL

Change here in the morning for the ZentralBahn (ZB) towards Lucerne.

When you want to visit everything in this tour, you haven't got much time to see the city. In fact, I personally had no time at all to change over to the connecting Boat service. But when you do have time, Lucerne is really worth a visit! The SGV operates every hour a service towards Vitznau to change for Rigi Kulm or travel further skipping Rigi towards Flüelen to change directly to the trains.

Mount Rigi offers a wide variety of activities, ranging from well-signposted hiking and walking trails to bike routes and launch sites for paragliders and a minigolf course. Of course there is also a number of cafés and restaurants if you just want to relax and enjoy the day.

When getting of the Rigi Bahn you need to walk about 350m towards the station of Arth Goldau. Here you take one of the hourly IC services towards Lugano over the Gotthard.

Within 2 hours the landscape change from a Switzerland/Germany style towards completely Italian with palmtrees everywhere. After an overnight here in Lugano you travel towards Tirano. Traveling towards Tirano is via the Bernina Express Bus (reservation required) or with train trough Italy.

You need to change in the little town of Tirano towards the trains of the Rheatian Railway. Take one of the normal Regional trains or the special Bernina Express. For more information please read the blog.

St. Moritz or Sankt Moritz is one of the expensive ski resorts in winter. When you need to change here have a brake at the lake, just around the corner of the station. Finding a sleep place around St. Moritz can be really expensive. Have a look around the others villages to find something cheaper.

I found my accommodation in Preda, this is a really small village on the other end of the Albula Tunnel. There's only one hotel and just some other houses. When boarding the Glacier Express in Preda; This is not an official stop of the Glacier Express. He does stop here since it is coupled together with the Regional Express. When the doors don't open in some reason, just travel in one of the RE wagons towards Filisur and change wagons.

When traveling over the Oberalp Pass have a look to the left. Here you find the source of the Rhine!

Zermatt is one of the car free and original Wallis villages. In the time it has been grown to on of the bigger ski resorts. But don't forget the many Asians getting here in summer. I can seriously recommend the tour up towards the Gornergrat. For more information please read the Blog. If you want something else or something cheaper, please have a look at the villages Saas-Grund/Saas-Fee. Almost the same, but much quieter. Only reachable by bus from Visp or Stalden.

Brig and Visp are both big interchange points. Visp for the direct and fast IC Spiez Bern and Zermatt; Brig for Italy and the BLS Lötschberger. If you have the extra hour available; please take the Lötschberger via Kandersteg. For more information about the reason and route check the Blog!
