Hi All,

This is my first post, starting off with a request. I am from Dubai and travelling to Munich on 16th August 2012 at 9 PM. I leave back to Dubai from Vienna on 25th August 2012 at 10.30 PM.

Without knowing much about Austria, want to make a holiday trip between these days. The places which i feel i would like to cover are Innsbruk, Salzburg, Prague, Budapest and Bratislava. This is apart from seeing Vienna. I have a couple of questions:

1. Can someone advise me if the above list is ambitious to cover?
2. Is it advisable to buy a Eurorail pass or any other pass for travel, or is it advisable to buy point to point tickets? Completely new to Europe rail travel, so any assistance will be welcome. Whatever is the most convinient and yet, most economical way of travel, would be welcome... (Flight? Bus? Train?) Except walking :(
3. What should be the places i must visit in these places? Or, are there any places i need not bother visiting?
4. I wanted to make vienna as base, and make in and out trips to Prague, Budapest and Bratislava. ie., go in morn and return in night. Is it advisable?
5. Similarly, i want to make Munich as base, and go in and out to Innsbruk and Salzburg. Again, is it advisable?
6. I only speak English. Will i have difficulty in communication? Is it advisable to take a packaged tour?

Any help will be welcome, soonest, as i need to make bookings.

Secondly, i am a single traveller...I am hoping a friend of mine joins, but a this moment, she is highly unlikely due to her commitments. If anyone feels the above tour program is interesting and want to join, do let know...

Cheers...

Hi.
Comparing point to point tickets to an Eurail pass is difficult. As it always depends on the day you book, fares may vary. But it is possible to get special fares for point to point, but then you are fixed on trains, times and dates.
Have a look on the websites of ÖBB (Austria - [ux]https://rail.shop/oebb[/ux] ), DB (Germany - [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] ) and MAV (Hungary - [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux] ).

1) It is possible to visit all these places within 10 days.

2) See above. And as railcc is specialized on rail travel, I can't give you details about other ways of travel. Sorry. :)

3) From Munich you could travel for example to Schloss Neuschwanstein, then to Salzburg.
Or from Munich to Nuremberg and then to Prague.

4) For Bratislava: YES. For Budapest and Prague: NO. You will find in both cities inexpensive places to stay!

5) YES.

6) NO - no problems with English! :)

Thanks Peter.

Further to your response, i am inclined to change my plans silghtly.

I am planning to drop off Munich and Innsbruk (could do some other time later), and fly into Vienna on 17th Aug and fly out on 25th Aug.

Shall visit Salzburg from Vienna (I guess it is 2 hr 40 min?) by train...and then, will visit Bartislava from Vienna out and back. As far as Budapest and Prague, i shall stay there over night.

Any other places I could cover, given that we will have many days at our disposal?

Kind Regards

Hi.
Viena can be your base for Salzburg and Bratislava. So if you prefer to stay in one hostel or hostel, it is a nice solution.

But like I said: Budapest an Vienna are better to stay there overnight.

Train connections are here: https://rail.cc/en/search-eurail-route

Between Prague and Vienna have a look on thecities: Ceske Budejovice, Cesky Krumlov or Brno

Hi All,

I am planning to take a trip to Vienna by May 2017. Have chosen my base Vienna and want to cover Salzburg & Innsbruck from there. Trip will be of a week. I will be coming from India.

Please help me to plan this out perfectly as I don\'t know much about the places.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rachana!

There are different options for you. The fastest one would be to travel Vienna - Salzburg - Innsbruck on the direct route; making the stop in Salzburg on the outbound or inbound journey (from Vienna) makes no difference. Between Vienna and Salzburg you can choose between the trains of ÖBB (Austrian Railways) and private operator Westbahn. You can book tickets at [ux]rail.shop/oebb[/ux] and [ux]rail.shop/westbahn[/ux]. ÖBB offers cheaper "Sparschiene" tickets, these are advance fare tickets valid only on the date and train you select when booking the ticket. On the other hand, if you want to stay flexible, the standard anytime fare of Westbahn is cheaper than the regular fare of ÖBB, so if you dont know when you want to go, just take a Westbahn train and buy your ticket on board the train.

To travel from Salzburg to Innsbruck you have to travel with ÖBB so I would recommend to buy a "Sparschiene" ticket in advance. If you have time, I would also recommed to travel one leg of your trip via the slower, but more scenic line via Zell am See. However, tickets for this route are unfortunately not sold online.

You can of course also buy a Eurail pass for Austria [ux]https://rail.cc/en/eurail-austria-pass[/ux] but you are likely to travel cheaper with regular tickets bought in advance.

If you have more questions, please just ask.
