Hi, I have a situation that needs immediate assistance so I thought I might get some help here. I have a friend that is going from Lugansk to Barcelona and I am trying to find the easiest route.

I am thinking at this point it has to be as follows:
Lugansk to Kiev
Kiev to Budapest
Budapest to Barcelona

Knowing that there are transfers in between.

Are there different suggestions anyone has? Thank you.

Hi...
A solution might be this one. It is an easy and direct one for by point to point tickets.

You friend has to buy the ticket The ticket from Lugansk via Slawjansk and Kiev to Budapest at Lugansk station.
Lugansk dep: 1940
Slawjansk arr: 2330

Slawjansk dep: 0026
Kiev Pass arr: 0556

Kiev Pass dep: 1105
Budapest-Keleti arr: 1120

Now the ticket from Budapest to Zurich at [ux]https://rail.shop/mav[/ux] - e-ticket with print out at the ticket machine in Budapest. Easy and save. 6-bed-couchette for EUR 49.
Budapest-Keleti dep: 1910
Zürich HB arr: 0720

The following ticket at [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux] as e-ticket from EUR 41
Zürich HB dep: 0934
Paris Gare de Lyon arr: 1337

And finally an e-ticket for Paris-Barcelona at [ux]https://rail.shop/sncf[/ux] from EUR 69
Paris Gare de Lyon dep: 1407
Figueres Vilafant arr: 1940

Figueres Vilafant dep: 1955
Barcelona Sants arr: 2048

If your friend travels this route, please post how much was the ticket from Lugansk/Kiev to Budapest. It will be helpful for other travellers as well. Thank you.
Peter :)

Hi Peter. I was hoping not to have to bother you again. I went out to the website for the Budapest to Zurich and looks like the price has gone up Showed 71.90 euros/person, 6 couchette. My question is at what point does it make sense to buy a Eurail (he is from the US) - 5 countries, 5 travel days within 2 months? Would that work for the above? My only concern would be how to pay extra so for the over nighters, he would have the 6-couchette? He is basically going down to Barcelona and coming right back. This probably sounds sketchy. He is our ivf intermediary.

Hi.
It depends on the travel dates - as earlier your friend books the trains, as cheaper the prices are.
A calculation you have to do by yourself... I can do only the same what you will do as well: check the links I gave you, add up all the tickets and compare it to an Eurail pass.
Keep in mind, Eurail is not valid in Ukraine. As well, you have to add reservation fees for night trains or high-speed trains.

This would be the night train Budapest - Zurich for EUR 21,90 - https://rail.cc/en/night-train/budapest-zurich-en-60466/178

Zurich - Paris: the TGV Lyra for EUR 9 - https://rail.cc/en/train/zurich-to-paris

Paris - Barcelona: for the TGV starting form EUR 6 (only limited seats available for rail pass travellers, so not sure if he hast to pay much more, up to 25 EUR or even can't enter the train he want) + in Spain additional EUR 6.

I think it is hard to get these reservations already in Ukraine, so he has to try to get them in Budapest.
Of course he can avoid as well trains with this reservation fees, but then it will be much slower.

Peter :)
