For my first interrail trip me and couple of friends are going to get the gobal pass and do this route...

Fly to Barcelona stay there for afew days, then when the pass starts go Paris - Amsterdam - Berlin - Prague - Munich - Milan - Venice - Pisa - Rome then get the ferry to Athens and finally arrive in Istanbul on the last day of the pass, fly home few days after that.

Its a good route for us because there are lots of sleeper trains, so we will save money on hostels. Anyone know of any good pubs/clubs in the cities on route for us to try? :D

Sounds like it will be very good!

Athens to Istanbul is a long way, though. You may want to look at going to Thessaloniki in the north of Greece for a day or two - lots to see there, and it would break up the journey a bit.

Can't help you on the pubs and clubs...I haven't been interrailing before (first time this summer).

I thought about doing this, But the way we planned the route was to have everyone going pick 3 or 4 places. Ive tried to plan out times etc, and really I just cant find enough time to stop in thessoniki for anymore than an afternoon, get the early train from athens, arrive thessoniki early afternoon and depart for istanbul late that night.

Well, I suppose you could just spend an afternoon there and catch an overnight InterCity link to Istanbul in the evening. It would cost you more, but it would really cut down on the time you spend on a train. As far as I know there is no direct overnight link from Athens to Istanbul, so it still may be worth going to Thessaloniki just to get the direct train to Istanbul.

If you just take a normal train, it will of course be cheaper, but it takes an age to get to Istanbul. Really, some of the quoted times I've seen are just ridiculous.

Yeah, Ive seen some of them myself. There is a 11.5 hour overnighter leaves at 20:00 which i think will be best for us. Ive tried to cram in overnight trains alot to get the maximum time in each place and minimise daytime travel.
