Dear Rail.cc,

We have bought 4 tickets to Passau with bycicles for 12. August. Our train leaves from Budapest at 8:40. We have to change the train in Wien and Linz too .We have 9 minutes in Wien and 6 minutes in Linz to change. What happens if we miss the train in Wien or Linz because of a late arrival? The same day we have to go by bycicles 50 kms from Passau to another place to stay. Do you have maybe an earlier train from Budapest to Wien / with 4 bycicles/?
How can we change the tickets we bought today for an earlier train to Wien?

Best regards,
Anna

Hi Anna, welcome to railcc!

Which type of ticket did you book? Where - at which website?

Most tickets nowadays are some kind of "advance" or "saver" fare which are cheaper but only valid on the booked connection. This means that you couldnt take an earlier (or later) train but have to take the trains indicated on the ticket (starting at 08:40 from Budapest).

However - if you would miss a connection due to a delayed train you are of course entitled to use other trains to get to your destination. The train or station staff will help you. Also, you are entitled to a refund of 25% or 50%, depending on how much delay you have at the end of the journey.

Regarding changing trains:
9 minutes in Wien and 6 minutes in Linz are indeed not very much; in fact, having bicycles I would almost consider it too less time.
Anyway, if possible I would recommend that one of your group heads straight to the connecting train (without a bike) to signal to the conductor that your group is coming. Do you think that would be possible that three of your group handle your four bikes?
Also I would not rely of the lifts; instead use the stairs.

Check out the station layout on [ux]http://openstreetmap.org/[/ux].
Arriving in Vienna on EC 140 your coach (with the bikes) should be very close to the lift/stairs so thats good.
What number has your coach on the connecting train to Linz? 21 would be close the lift/stairs again (right at the beginning of the platform); 31 would be in the middle of the platform.
