I want to travel from Madrid to Malaga without using high-speed trains. I have an Interrail Global pass and I was wondering if you need to make reservations for regular trains in Spain. I saw that there was a connection from Madrid to Malaga via Cordoba for example, an intercity train I believe. Thanks a lot.

Hi and welcome.

Spain is not the perfect Interrail country. Most trains require a reservation. Please read here: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/spain/es

In your case you have the direct AVE trains from Madrid to Malaga with Euro 10 reservation fee for Interrail: https://rail.cc/en/interrail-train-reservation/ave-renfe/23

If you split your trip in Madrid to Cordoba, you have the trains (in brakets the reservation fees) like AV City (Euro 6,50), Alvia (Euro 6,50), Altaria (Euro 6,50), Intercity (Euro 4), MD-LD (Euro 4).
From Cordoba again trains like the Avant (Euro 4).
Beside the direct AVE (Euro 10).

If you combine an Intercity Madrid-Cordoba and the Avant Cordoba to Malaga, you save 2 Euros... but it will take much more time. If you mix the wrong trains, you pay even more than the direct AVE with Euro 10...
Spain is a calculation... ;)

And don\'t forget, support the free content on rail.cc and buy your Interrail pass via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]
Same price for you, but support of rail.cc. Thank you! :)

Hi!

As Pete already has written, the best option is to travel with the high speed trains in Spain (and paying for a seat reservation). There are very few lines with "real" regional/stopping trains (which can be found mostly in Catalunya) and most other long-distance regional services (like "MD") require a seat reservation too.

Only around the larger cities you will find suburban services (called "Cercanias" or "Rodalies" which you can use without a reservation).
