What should you pack? In which countries do trains tend to be crowded? Is sleeping on the train safe? Which special advice can you find about popular cities like Rome or Paris?

Was sollten Sie einpacken? In welchen Ländern neigen die Züge überfüllt sein? Ist auf den Zug sicher schlafen? Welche besondere Hinweise finden Sie zu beliebten Städten wie Rom oder Paris?

Hi punkinpants and welcome to rail.cc

A very general question, therefore not easy to give you a detailed answer... ;)

1) What to pack:
Not too much. You can wash clothes in hostels. If you backpack is light, you will much more enjoy your trip. It also depends on where you want to travel to, which season: summer or winter.
Read for example our blog here: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/toiletry-bag-travel/[/ux]

2) In which countries trains tend to be crowded:
No general answer is possible. It more depends on the routes you travel, on the day you travel. It is like everywhere: trains are usually full at the beginning and the end of a weekend (Friday afternoon + Sunday afternoon/evening). Then in peak times in the morning 07:00 to 09:00 h and afternoon 16:00 to 18:00 h.

3) Is sleeping in a train is save:
If you use a couchette or sleeper, you can always lock the door. Fix your backpack with a locker on your seat or somewhere else in the compartment. Join other travellers. I personally never had problems the past 20 years travelling by night train. I would say: it is safe.

4) Rome and Paris... maybe just check here in our database:
Rome: https://rail.cc/en/rome/c
Paris: https://rail.cc/en/paris/c
In general you always get a map and a short introduction in the hostels when you arrive. So you won\'t miss the highlights... but it is often much nicer to skip a bit the main tourist attraction and to walk a bit beside the typical tourist paths.

And please support all the free information we offer with your purchase of your official Interrail pass via our partner link [ux]https://rail.shop/interrail[/ux]

Thank you, Pete :)

P.S.: bellow some blogs to give you an idea what is possible to visit by train. More in our blog: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog[/ux]
