To travel by train from Istanbul in Turkey to Berlin in Germany, there are two main routes available.
Either from Istanbul (Turkey) via Bucharest (Romania) to Budapest (Hungary).
Or from Istanbul via Sofia (Bulgaria) and Belgrade (Serbia) to Budapest.
From Budapest continue to Germany.

The route consist of more than one step. You have to buy more than one train ticket.
1A Travelling from Istanbul (Turkey) to Bucharest (Romania)
If you want to travel from Turkey to Romania by train, buy your train ticket locally at a train station in Turkey. The best option is to buy it at the Sirkeci station in Istanbul. You will find international ticket counters at the train stations of larger cities. There are no online tickets available.

The only rail connection between the two countries (via Bulgaria) is the line from Istanbul via the Kapikule/Svilengrad border crossing. Currently the night train from Istanbul to Bucharest and Sofia is the only service across the border.

1B Travelling from Bucharest (Romania) to Budapest (Hungary)
Tickets from Romania to Hungary are available from international ticket offices at stations in Romania. There are a number of offers available, inlcuding discounts on regular one-way or return tickets as well as advance saver fares. However, online tickets from Romanian Railways CFR are not available for international journeys.

You can buy online tickets from Hungarian Railways MAV START, however online tickets from MAV START have to be printed from ticket machines at stations in Hungary!

International services run mainly from Bucharest either via Brasov - Sibiu/Sighisoara - Simeria or Craiova - Timisoara to Arad and then via the Curtici/Lököshaza border crossing to Budapest. Additional international express trains run from Brasov - Cluj Napoca - Oradea via the Episcopia Bihor/Biharkeresztes border crossing to Budapest.

2B Travelling from Sofia (Bulgaria) to Belgrade (Serbia)
If you want to travel from Bulgaria to Serbia by train, buy your train ticket locally at a train station in Bulgaria. You will find international ticket counters at the train stations of larger cities (Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas, Varna). At many stations, international tickets are sold at specific ticket offices, called RILA agencies, which are separate from the domestic ticket offices. There are no online tickets available.

The only rail connection between the two countries is the line from Sofia to Nis via the border stations of Kalotina and Dimitrovgrad.
