1b Travelling from Tehran (Iran) to Ankara (Turkey)

To travel from Iran to Turkey by train you have to use several trains today. Until 2015 an Iranian train ran from Tehran to Van and a Turkish one from Tatvan to Ankara. Since June 2018 the journey is now possible again by train.

First travel from Tehran to Tabriz by night train (dep. 19:15 / arr 08:00). Tickets at: rail.shop/iran

In Tabriz change to the train to Van. This train runs only once per week. Departure in Tabriz Monday at 23:30. Arrival in Van on Tuesday at 06:45. The border control is in the middle of the night. Price about Euro 9. Buy your ticket locally or contact: rail.shop/iran

From Van take the ferry to Tatvan. Journey time is about 4 hours. Timetables available locally.

In Tatvan get on the "Vangölü Ekspresi" in direction of Ankara which leaves twice per week on Tuesday an Thursday at 07:00. Journey time to Ankara is about 24 hours. Tickets from Euro 10 on: rail.shop/tcdd
For now it is not possible to reach it and you have two days rest in Tatvan (wait until Thursday). We update the information as soon as the connection is optimized. Option is to continue by bus to Ankara, but not that comfortable.

1d Travelling from Istanbul (Turkey) to Bucharest (Romania)

To travel from Turkey to Romania by train, buy your train ticket locally at a train station in Turkey. The best option is to buy it at the Sirkeci station in Istanbul. You will find international ticket counters at the train stations of larger cities. There are no online tickets available.

The only rail connection between the two countries is the line from Istanbul via the Kapikule/Svilengrad border crossing and Bulgaria. Currently the night train from Istanbul to Bucharest and Sofia is the only service across the border.

1e Travelling from Bucharest (Romania) to Vienna (Austria)

Tickets from Romania to Austria are available from international ticket offices at stations in Romania. However, online tickets from Romanian Railways CFR are not available for international journeys.

You can buy online tickets from Austrian Railways ÖBB, however online tickets from ÖBB have to be printed from ticket machines at stations in Austria!

There is one direct night train from Bucharest (Romania) in direction of Vienna (Austria).

1g Travelling from Cologne (Germany) to Brussels (Belgium)

To travel from Germany to Belgium by train, use one of the high-speed trains ICE or Thalys. They connect the cities of Frankfurt and Cologne with Liege and Brussels. From and to these cities you have good connection services by the national railway providers of each country. Please use one of the following booking links to find schedules and ticket prices. If you avoid peak travel times, you will find very attractive discount fares. Usually you can book your journey from your departure station in Germany to your destination station in Belgium in one step via these booking links. If not, add a second ticket beside the one of the main connection with the high-speed trains. There are as well cheap regional trains available from Aachen to Welkenraedt with connections from Cologne and to Brussels.
