Hi

This summer I am travelling from Groningen, Netherlands to Venice, Italy and 2 week later back from Rome to Groningen.

I saw that there a 2 good options:

1. Travel via Amsterdam to Paris with Thalys and then take a nighttrain to Venice with Thello.
2. Travel via Arnhem to Munich bij CityNighline and then a day train to Venice.

The option via Paris seems better to me, but I would like some advice / suggestions. Who knows which is the best way to travel and why?

We are looking for fast and comfortable options. Of course price always matters but comfort is also a factor. We are a couple and want to book a private sleeper.

Hi MargarethaAnders,

please note that CityNightLine brand has been taken over by ÖBB and replaced by NightJet. There are no Nightjet trains to the Netherlands, however, a daily train between Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Innsbruck and Vienna remains. For your purposes, it\'s probably best to travel Cologne-Innsbruck overnight. Nightjet sleeping cars are comfortable and get good reviews and the Brenner line between Innsbruck and Venice is very scenic. However, Thalys+Thello is also a perfectly adequate alternative. Personally, I would just compare prices and and go with the cheaper option. Please note that both Nightjet and Thello are frequently delayed by up to two hours (especially northbound, due to border controls), so leave enough time when making changes.

Have a nice trip!

Best, Quenzon

Hi MargarethaAnders,

it\'s just about possible to do the journey by day, but it\'s going to be very long and exhausting, I don\'t recommend it:

Amsterdam Centraal dep 06:38 7b ICE 121
Duisburg Hbf arr 08:32 2
Transfer time 30 min.

Duisburg Hbf dep 09:02 13 ICE 1223
München Hbf arr 15:09 23
Transfer time 25 min.

München Hbf dep 15:34 12 EC 83
Verona Porta Nuova arr 20:56
Transfer time 34 min.

Verona Porta Nuova dep 21:30 FR 9759
Venezia Santa Lucia arr 22:40

The Nightjet trains are quite nice, the quality of service has improved a lot since the CityNightLine days. The only thing you need to be aware of are the possible delays, but you can buy a through ticket Cologne-Venice from ÖBB and be covered in terms of passenger rights. I therefore recommend to travel overnight via Cologne and Innsbruck.

Have a nice trip!

Hi Margaretha.

Quenzon already explained you a lot. :)
Therefore only some additional input. I would also include a night train.

1) Groningen to Paris. Schedules and tickets on [ux]https://rail.shop/nsinternational[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]
In Paris you have to change stations by Metro. Not complicate, but depends on the luggage you have.

2) In the evening leaving Paris by Thello night train directly to Paris. I travelled this spring/summer on this route and my night train was nearly two hours delayed in Venice. But it was no problem for me - especially as I got 50% of the ticket price back as compensation. Read my blog post here: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/thello-paris-milan-venice/[/ux]
Tickets and schedules for this night train on [ux]https://rail.shop/thello[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux]

Of course there are the other options mentioned above available. I would not travel the whole trip by day train.

On your way back from Rome, you could include the nightjet night train from Rome to Munich. And on by day train.

1) Rome to Munich by nightjet. Please have a look at our blog post here for more details and photos: [ux]jjj[/ux]
Train tickets and schedules on [ux]https://rail.shop/oebb[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/nightjet[/ux]

2) From Munich to Rome you can get saver price tickets from Euro 39 by day train. Check [ux]https://rail.shop/bahn[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/nsinternational[/ux]

Pete :)

Heyhey, Welkom op RailCC!

Is er een reden dat het zo snel mogelijk moet? Mag ik ook een comfortabele optie aandragen?

From the Netherlands most routes advise you that you\'ll always need to travel via Amsterdam or Arnhem, but maybe is via Leer an option?

The day connection via Leer -> Hannover -> München -> Verona -> Venezia as mentioned above is absolutely possible, but 16 hours travel on a day isn\'t comfortable.
The reason for choosing the nighttrain Hannover(or Dusseldorf)- Innsbruck and not the München - Padova is based on the times.

Leer 12:41 -> Hannover 15.26 -> München 20:10 -> Padova 05:21! -> Venezia 06:53
Leer 17:41 -> Hannover 21:57 -> Innsbruck 09:14
Here it get\'s complicated, there\'s an 10 minute change from the nighttrain to the 09:24 EC Verona --> Venezia 14:40
Or take an later local train connection Innsbruck 09:49/10:49 - Brennero - Bolzano - Verona - Venezia 15:40/16:10

Keep in mind that you\'ll need the station Venezia Santa Lucia, not Venezia Mestre, but that\'s just an short route.

But other than that, May I suggest you another (long) day route: Arnhem - Basel - Lugano - Milano - Venezia.
ICE departs 09:07 from Arnhem and direct to Basel, without a change in Frankfurt, comfortable!
Consider staying overnight in Switzerland, Bern (for a real Switzerland vibe) or Lugano (for an Italian vibe in Switzerland). Really worth a visit! Combine it with the Lötschberg route (See blog!, Basel-Bern-Brig-Milano) or Gotthard route (Basel-Lugano-Milano). Hotel prices aren\'t that much of a problem, buying 2 tickets can be more expensive.

Veel plezier tijdens jullie trip!
Wouter.
