Hi! We are planning on a trip to Vemdalen via night train frm Malmo on 22nd December 2018 (Saturday) to 26th December 2018 (Wednesday). We are not planning to stay a week there.

My questions are:

1) To my understanding (doing some research from sites and ect) train from Rojan back to Malmo only departs on every Sunday evening of the week? Is that true?

2) If this is true, meaning there will be no train running to Malmo from Rojan on weekdays?

Thanks heap!

Hello and welcome.
Röjan is a stop of the famous Inlandsbanan, a very scenic railway. Inlandsbanan runs on the route to Röjan https://rail.cc/en/roejan/station/c only in the summer months. Last winter as well in the winter months but not sure for this coming winter.

You reach Röjan in the summer months by night train from Stockholm. Therefore the route could look like this:
Malmö to Stockholm by day train.
Stockholm to Östersund by night train.
Östersund to Röjan by Inlandsbanan.
All tickets available via [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/sj[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/sj[/ux] - just search for "Malmö C" to "Röjan".

Röjan is about 30km away from Vemdalen.

More information about Inlandsbanan in our blog: https://rail.cc/blog/inlandsbanan/

The direct night train from Malmö to Östersund runs (like you already found out) not daily and only on selected dates - therefore the "detour" via Stockholm like described above.

NOTE: to reach your destination Vemdalen in winter (and also in summer the more direct and easier way), use the connection up to Östersund like described above. From Östersund continue by bus of LT Jämtland (bus number 164).
Easiest way to book via [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/sj[/ux] or [ux]https://rail.shop/sj[/ux] - search for "Malmö C" to "Vemdalen by" - then the bus ticket is already included. :)

Let me know if you have further questions.

Pete :)

Hi and welcome to railcc!

As already mentioned, the Malmö - Röjan night train was running only once weekly during the winter in 2017/2018: [ux]https://rail.cc/en/night-train/malmoe-roejan-veo-3900/494[/ux]
There is no information available yet when and if this night train will run (again) in winter of 2018/2019, information will only become available over the course of 2018, with definitive timetables becoming available sometime in autumn.

Anyway, you can definitely go as far as Östersund which is frequently served by long distance trains from Stockholm operated by SJ. Bus transfer from Östersund to Röjan/Vemdalen should be possible as explained by Pete.

For further planning it is too early, unfortunately.
