DE Germany

The modern concert hall was opened on 8th October 1981.

The main foyer is dominated by the vibrantly colorful painting "Song of Life" (Gesang vom Leben) by the Leipzig artist Sighard Gille.
It covers four sloped ceilings (712 square meters), making it the largest contemporary ceiling painting in Europe.

The Great Hall has a seating capacity of over 1900 and the Mendelssohn Hall has just under 500 seats.

The great room has a Schuke organ (organ builder = Schuke from Potsdam).
This organ impressed by four manuals, 89 pipe registers, three registers for glockenspiel and whistling Cymbelglocken and 6638 pipes.

At the organ of the Gewandhaus is written the motto:
"RES SEVERA VERUM GAUDIUM" (True joy is a serious matter).
These words accompany the orchestra since his arrival at the first concert hall in 1781.

(Sources: the data come from the partial explanations of our city tour and some I have also looked up again at the home of the Gewandhaus.)

Augustusplatz 8, 04109 Leipzig
