1b Interrail: Travelling from Lisbon (Portugal) to Hendaye (France)

To travel from Portugal to France by Interrail, there are two main routes. It depends from where your destination is in France.

The first route is by direct night train from Lisbon to the Spanish-French border at Hendaye/Irun (reservation required). There you change to a TGV train in direction of Bordeaux and Paris (additional reservation with Interrail).

The second route is from Lisbon by direct night train to Madrid (reservation required). There you continue by high-speed-trains via Barcelona in direction of France (Marseille, ...) - additional reservations with Interrail.

To travel in France by Interrail might be a bit tricky. As TGV high-speed-trains require an extra reservation. Also several IC trains. If you avoid peak travel times and reserve early you will get cheaper reservations. At peak travel times, reservations may be sold out. 1d Interrail: Travelling from Paris (France) to Hamburg (Germany)

To travel from France to Germany by Interrail, the direct high-speed-trains Thalys (Paris to Cologne) and TGV/ICE (Paris/Marseille to Frankfurt/Stuttgart) require an extra reservation. There are reservation-free options available. For example via Belgium, using slower, but free IC and local trains. Please read our blog for more information.

1e Interrail: Travelling from Hamburg (Germany) to Stockholm (Sweden)

When travelling with Interrail you will most likely cross Denmark on your way to Sweden. The direct EC trains between Germany and Denmark require a reservation during the peak summer season. There are also connections with IC Buses of DB (German Railways) which also require a reservation.

From Copenhagen, you can use Oresund regional trains to cross the border and go to Malmö or Göteborg. These do not require a reservation. Alternatively you can use the high speed Snabbtag trains to Malmö, Göteborg and Stockholm with compulsory reservation.

The ferry between Helsingor and Helsingborg is free with Interrail.

During summer you can use the Berlin - Malmö night train.

1f Interrail: Travelling from Stockholm (Sweden) to Helsinki (Finland)

To travel by ferry and Interrail from Stockholm to Helsinki, book a direct overnight ferry. The daily departure time in Stockholm is in the late afternoon. The arrival in Helsinki in the morning.

If you want to travel by a cheaper ferry or during the day (not overnight), you have to take a ferry route from Stockholm to Turku.

The journey time is about 17 hours. A reduction of 20% to 50% on the standard ticket price is available for Interrail. It depends on the season.

1g Interrail: Travelling from Helsinki (Finland) to Klaukkala (Finland)
