On July 2019 we will be coming back from Alpe Adria ( 4 person with 4 bikes). Is it possible to reserve tickets on a train from Udine to Salzburg or we should buy them before Journey. Does each train from Udine to Salzburg can take us with bikes. How buy the tickets to pay also for bikes.
Thank you for the answer.

Hello Matkrys1,

there are still only few trains passing the border between Udine/Friuli and Villach during the day. Many courses are still done by bus. For the daily running Railjet leaving Udine at 11:46 arrival Villach Hbf at 13:11 reservation for bicycles is necessary. The changiging to Railjet 793 to Salzburg leaving 13:16 (rervation for bicycles necessary) can be a problem if the first train comming from Venice is considerably delayed.
A second possibility is Railjet from Udine to Vienna, departure 17:46 and arriving at Villach Hbf 19:11. Departure Villach Hbf with IC 895 to Salzburg, arrival 21:48.
Again bicycle transport requires reservation. Nevertheless, from Villach to Salzburg are more options with bicycle transport; a direct Railjet runs every two hours.

There are two other crossborder connections by the Ferrovie Udine Cividale running as an additional service to the few long-distance trains from the ÖBB. This service is called MiCoTra; normally there is at least one in the morning (7:14 dep. Udine) and one in the late afternoon (Udine dep. 17:22) running Trieste Centrale-Udine - Villach Hbf. The Micotra timetable for 2019 is not yet available (check the possibilities during spring 2019), but these trains offer always bicycle transportation, especially for people on the Alpe-Adria bicycle trail. Die Tickets sind an jedem ÖBB Ticketschalter am ÖBB Ticketautomaten sowie online unter oebb.at , über die ÖBB App und in den MICOTRA Zügen erhältlich. Tickets are sold at the stations if occupied, but also on the train(same price), you can simply hop on.

At the moment there is only the old 2018 timetable :

http://www.ferrovieudinecividale.it/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/ORARIO-FUC-MICOTRA-TRIESTE_2018.pdf
https://www.oebb.at/de/regionale-angebote/kaernten/micotra-friaul-julisch-venetien.html

This is an old-style local train service which takes longer, but stops also at several stations near the Alpe-Adria bicycle trail (Gemona, Venzone, Carnia, Pontebba, Ugovizza). This can be a good option if there is bad weather or other problems and you need train transport. Be aware that you do not find this service at the moment in the DB or ÖBB search engines, as the timetable of 2019 seems not yet established and sometimes train service can be suspended during to work at the rails. So please check again in june 2019.

Kind regards

Julian
