One addition to some of the advice on this website is the possibility to book a trip between destinations in the Netherlands and Slovenia directly from the ÖBB website. Itineraries will connect with the first ICE in the morning from Amsterdam, Utrecht or Arnhem and with a change in Duisburg/Frankfurt, München, and Villach one can reach Jesenice, Bled, Kranj, Ljubljana, Litija, Zidani Most, Sevnica and Dobova on the same day.
Excellent option, as the single booking makes öbb responsible for you reaching your destination in a reasonable way.

Unfortunately even öbb does not offer single bookings for itineraries that include night trains as of now,

Thnaks for this info. However, just out of curiosity I checked for such a single in the day on 21/4 (random date, but after Easter hols) on oebb and also on bahn (DB). Both gave same timings-the rather odd way via Hannover (with 4 or 5 quite short transfers needed), but bahn wanted 60 eur and oebb 83 for the same. On bahn this is possible since some time now and of course this is much more known and used in NL. However even on bahn it quite often is cheaper to break somewhere in DE, as this may lead to considerable lower fares. I did not check for this trip. for 60 eur also 2 people can fly (transavia), perhaps on another date though.
