Good to know:

Romania's railway network is rather dense and most touristically important cities can be reached by train. However travel times are often rather long since many lines wait for upgrading. On main lines you usually find several fast trains during the day, additionally there are still many night trains all across the country. Many secondary lines are operated by private companies where Eurail is not valid. Since fares are quite low it isn't a problem though to buy separate tickets if you want to use one of these lines. International trains run to Budapest, Vienna, Belgrade, Sofia, Istanbul as well as to Moldova and Ukraine.

Besides the capital Bucharest other touristically interesting cities are Cluj, Timisoara, Brasov and Sibiu. Scenic routes run across the Carpathians, for instance from Bucharest to Brasov or from Craiova to Simeria. Another interesting line is along the river Olt from Sibiu to Piatra Olt. You can also explore the vast Danube Delta around Tulcea.

Timetables for the mainline network operated by CFR Calatori are available in our schedule planner or the Eurail app which include all trains and timings. However we recommend to check timings on the website of CFR Calatori or locally. Schedules for private railways are available on their websites or on the Romanian schedule planner.
