Hi all,

I intend to travel on the 26th Dec Saturday from Kemi to Lulea. Would the bus still be available on Boxing Day? Is 26th Dec a public holiday in Finland & Sweden so that no public transport? Just want to check.

Thanks.

Hi!

On the websites of the Finnish buses to Haparanda/Tornio there is no specific mention of boxing day traffic, however the online schedule planer [ux]https://www.matkahuolto.fi/en/[/ux] lists only one departure at 1851 (compared to five or six the previous saturday).
On the website of the Swedish bus [ux]http://www.ltnbd.se/[/ux] you cannot search for dates after December 12 (when the new timetable gets valid) but the 1851 departure has no connection to Lulea in the current timetable.

You could get on the night train from Helsinki to Kolari which leaves Kemi at around 8 in the morning and get off at Tornio Itänen; walk across town to Haparanda/Tornio bus station and should get a bus from there. Check timings on vr.fi and http://www.ltnbd.se/ - you'll have to wait until the new schedules will be uploaded though.

In general in SE nothing-well nearly nothing, will run on 25/12, and limited=less as normal for sun/hols on 26. What catches out many unknowing tourists is, that often the afternoon=eve BEFORE holidays is already near transport-less (thus 24/12 after 13/14.00). I don not know about FI.
Many people still have to travel late on 26/12 to get to work next day and then mostly the normal sunday timetable will be used.
In some läner there is instead an on-call service-by taxi-for those who have seasons and who DO have to travel- paid for by the trafiksellskaber. But that will not help you.
As you travel around on Xmas-make very, very sure you have some place to stay, also for FI-or risk being caught out. Manuy hostels, cheap hotels etc also close in that period.
