Hey guys,

Together with a friend, I am planning a trip through eastern Europe and a part of this trip will be from Kiev (Ukraine) to Chisinau (Moldova). If you look at the trainschedules, you will see that the train also stops at Tiraspol, in Transnistria. Does anybody have any experience with this route? From what I've read, you need an entry stamp in your pasport to exit Moldova (otherwise you've entered the country illegally), but when you cross the border between the Ukraine and Transnistria, you won't get an entry stamp. Do I need to take a different route? If so, what could be a good alternative? Also, I'm wondering what happens if you do take the train. Do I get an entrystamp at some point since this is an international connection? I'm hoping somebody has some experience with this route and can help me out ;) .

Kind regards,

Roy

Hi,

I dont have personal experience on that issue, but I assume that it shouldnt be a problem to exit Moldova if you show your Kiev - Chisinau ticket. Border control should be aware that the train passes Transnistria and therefore you dont get an entry tamp from Moldova.
I think you as a tourist cant be blamed for issues between Moldova and Transnistria which are unsolved for 20 years now...

Anyway, I think it might be a good idea to contact the Molodvan embassy...they should know about the official solution to that issue.

There are actually 2 different overnite trains ex MOW-stops Kyiv-to Chisinau (I think 1 Russian and 1 Moldovan) and 1 of these goes via TransDn-and the other not.
In Chisinau there is a special office where you get 'stamped in for MOL if you have happened to have come in via the Tr-Dnj route. This solves any potential problems (and there is not that much to do else in Chis either-except riding a multimillion trolejbuses to old communist housing flats), any hotel or YH will know the details.

I entered in Moldova from 2 different destinations, one from Odessa to Chisinau and then from Chisinau to Kyiv but this time by bus . Both of 2 trips,I had to pass through Transnistria and I didnt have any problem with my passport and my documents in general. But if you enter in Moldova through Transnistria you don't get stamped in your passport and I wanted to have that stamp :(( :P :P

From travellers that I met in both ways they told me that is better to pass this boarders by bus and not by train because they get your passports as a Group and not as an individual traveller. When you travel by train if border guards in any case doesn't like your face and they take you down in Transnistria then you are in bit shit because there are no official laws in this region. (This is what they told me,although I didn't have any problem)
