I've done 3 extensive InterRail trips before, this time I'm planning a one-country pass in Italy, which I use as base to explore - by ferry - otherwise hard-to-reach areas.

This way I can travel cheaper within Italy (8 days in a month pass) and from Italy use ferry to visit Montenegro, (then bus to Albania and ferry back to Italy) and ferry to Tunisia from Palermo. If I find time, perhaps ferry to sardinia or Corsica too.

Do I need to book these type ferry crossings long in advance, or just on the day of travel?
Also, are they particularly expensive?

Thank you!

Hi!

Unfortunately I dont have any experience with the ferries you want to travel with. But I assume that it is possible to book at short notice, especially if it is possible to book a deck passage only (without a cabin).

What routes are you going to travel in Italy? Are you going to use all of the eight travel days?

Thank you!
I think 8 travel days are needed in Italy. I'm planning on first visiting the dolomites, then visiting friends around Genova, then visiting Bologna and San Marino and Bari, Then after the Balkan trip taking the train to Sicily, and finally going back to wherever Im flying from. That's about 6 travel days within Italy, at the very least. I might also explore some of Sicily by train, and I might take some other detour.

I usually get the travel-all-you-like, unfortunately I can't get it for one country only.

Alright, looks like a good plan. :)
If you need extra travelling days, tickets for regional trains are quite cheap in Italy.

I would be glad if you could share your experiences with the ferries with us. :)
