InterCity trains are the backbone of long-distance travel in Finland. They operate on the main lines, connecting the capital Helsinki with all parts of the country. Most IC trains consist of modern double-deck coaches with comfortable seats and lots of space and different facilites. On some routes you will also find older, but refurbished single-deck coaches, running together with the double-deck carriages.

All trains have 2nd and 1st class accomodation. The coaches have air-condition, power sockets and Wifi. 2nd class is called "Eco". Seats are usually arranged in rows of four (2+2 seats) in open-plan arrangement with most seats in rows and only some seats facing each other. 1st class accomodation is called "Extra". Seats are arranged in rows of four as well (2+2 seats) however with a larger seating pitch. Newspapers and coffee, tea and water are available free of charge.

There are dedicated compartments for the disabled, families and children as well as for passengers with pets. Bicycles can be conveyed as well. Trains on longer routes (about three hours and more) also convey a restaurant car where you can get snacks, drinks and hot dishes. Trains on shorter routes often only have a minibar service.
