Hi, me and my girlfriend have been railing trough western europe and we have now ended up in split. And for the rest we want to go to Varna, BG and Istanbul.

Does anyone know what would be the best route to Bulgaria from split?

Thanks,
And greetings from Croatia!

Hi!

Thanks for supporting railc! ;)

Split to Varna is a rather long journey - how many days do you still have left on your pass? Do you want to end your pass in Varna or Istanbul or want to continue your trip afterwards?

What you could do:

Day 1: Night train to Zagreb
Day 2: Zagreb - Belgrade and continue with the night train to Sofia
Day 3: Sofia - Varna

So overall you have to calculate with at least about 40 hours. From Varna, you should have a look for buses to Istanbul - the rail journey is rather complicated and arduous at the moment: https://rail.cc/blog/from-bucharest-and-sofia-to-istanbul-by-train/

If you have enough time, I would definitely recommend to add a stop in Belgrade and Sofia (you could also visit Plovdiv and/or Veliko Tarnovo on the way).

Thanks for the reply:) we have 15 more days on the pass. If it's complicated with istanbul we'll just start heading north after a few days in varna. Mabye stop in sofia for a day or two.

OK - from personal experience I can definitely recommend to stop in Belgrade, Sofia and Plovdiv. Sofia is not _that_ interesting though IMO, but still worth staying at least one night. Restaurant recommendation: https://rail.cc/en/sofia/made-in-home/l5682
You may also look into Veliko Tarnovo, Rila monastery and mountains (day trip from Sofia) and Burgas with nearby Nesebar.
