Hi!
Answers are welcome in English and German. :)

It is going to be my first Interrail tour and I still have some questions about the ticket.

1) Outbound (living in Switzerland)
The first part is taking me from Basel to Zürich and from there I take the nighttrain to Vienna.

The start of my journey is after 7 pm on 16 July and I will arrive on 17 July. Now, if my Interrail pass is valid from 16 July, I only need to tick off 17 July as a travel day - is that correct or have I misunderstood that information?

2) I will stay in Vienna two days, travel to Soltszentimre, stay around there for a week, travel to Budapest, stay for two days, maybe travel to Warsaw... to be honest, I habe 7 more days and that part is absolutely open.
But for the Zürich - Vienna - Soltszentimre - Budapest part, two one country passes might be cheaper... or even normal tickets? It takes away some flexibility, but I am a bit unsure where to place the global pass fits financially.

Which leads me to my last question...

3) I consider the 7 or 10 days in a month global pass. Now, I will be back around 6 August, but the pass will be valid until 15 August. Could I use the leftover days (if I have them) on 12 and 13 August, hop over the French border and for example, travel to the Mediterranean Sea?

Thank you in advance for your inputs, ideas and answers!

Have a lovely day!

Hi and welcome to railcc!

I\'ll answer in english since your post is in english...but we can continue in German if you want ;)

1) You can use the "1900 rule for night trains" on your outbound journey, however only from Zurich to Vienna; if you want to travel from Basel to Zurich with your outbound Interrail journey you would have to use two travel days (July 16 and 17).
So, you could check out what would be cheaper for you - using two travel days and cover the whole trip Basel - Zürich - Vienna with Interrail or buy a separate ticket Basel - Zürich and travel with Interrail and the 1900 rule with only one travel day.

2) Interrail definitely makes sense if you are looking for some flexibility (also considering a possible trip to France, see 3)). Do you have any other plans except from Warsaw after Budapest? Would you consider travelling back home from Warsaw to Basel?
The reservation costs for the night train [ux]https://rail.cc/en/interrail-night-train/zurich-vienna-en-467-nightjet/63[/ux] are not exactly cheap, however with a saver price ("Sparschiene") you\'d lose all flexibility and would have to book well in advance to gain a financial benefit compared to Interrail plus reservation.
Vienna - Soltszentimre will probably turn out the same if you compare regular ticket and Interrail, although the return trip to Budapest of course is much cheaper using a single ticket bought locally.
However, overall a 7 day pass might be a good idea still, covering Zürich - Vienna, Vienna - Soltszentimre, Budapest - Warsaw, Warsaw - Basel and a possible trip to France and probably still leaving one day which you could use for an additional stop between Warsaw and Basel or for the trip Basel - Zurich.

3) Yes, this is possible of course; starting from Basel you wouldnt need any additional ticket for travelling in France so this would be a nice idea. Also, the TGV running from Strasbourg via Mulhouse to the south of France are "regular" TGV which are much cheaper than the "Lyria" trains running from Basel to Paris or from Geneve to the south: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/interrail-reservation-guide-tgv/[/ux]
