I want to book tickets on the InterCityNotte between Milan and Lecce for myself and my husband. When buying the tickets on the trenitalia site, they ask which service i want for each passenger. Should I book the three person compartment for one passenger, and ordinary seat for the other, or do I book three person compartment for each?

Hello fsbirdo and welcome to rail.cc :)

I recommend to go to [ux]https://rail.shop/omio[/ux] - there you can book in an easy to use system (multi-language and currencies). Same prices like on Trenitalia and secure!

Select the route "Milan" to "Lecce". Add the date. And a second passenger. Then search.
It should be a departure at 19:50h or another one at 20:50h (faster).

Select the ticket for "1st class".
Then you will see as option "2 bed cabin".
That\'s you choice! :) It is only for you both and private. You have a sink in the compartment, the toilet is on the floor.
To get an impression of such a journey by night train in Italy, have a look at my blog post. Departure was as well in Milan, the destination in Sicily: [ux]https://rail.cc/blog/volcano-etna-train/[/ux]

Enjoy your trip and don\'t hesitate to ask if you have further questions! Pete :)
