hi,

we (hubby, 9yr old child and myself) will be visiting Paris, Switzerland and Italy. we were planning to take the 10 day - 4 country Select pass for this. we needed some clarity on this:

1. we will travel from Paris to Basel (switzerland) by TGV. on the website it says that for eurail pass holders Reservation required - starting from Eur 15). However when i try to book my tickets it does not give any option to get a discount for Eurail pass holder and I need to pay the full amount of Eur 200 for 3 people.

2. Since Eurail has a tie up with SBB does that mean that I can board any swiss train (apart from the scenic trains like Bernina that require reservation) without buying a ticket? as most swiss trains do not require reservations.

3. In Italy, trains do require reservations but when i try to book it again does not show any option to get a discount as i have a eurail pass.

please Help.

regards
priyanka

Hi Priyanka.

1. Paris to Basel is by Lyria train: https://rail.cc/en/eurail-train-reservation/tgv-lyria/lyria-lyria/162
Prices start FROM EUR 15 - usually it is much more expensive since December 2014. You can buy the reservation via ACPRail shown at the link above.
It is much cheaper (~EUR 9 per person) if you travel by TGV from Paris to for example Mulhouse, there you change in a free local train. Not direct, but cheaper (3h vs 4h total journey time).

2. Eurail in Switzerland: https://rail.cc/en/eurail-train-reservation/switzerland/ch
Also check: https://rail.cc/blog/zurich-milano-albula-bernina/
And: https://rail.cc/blog/brig-visp-zermatt-gornergrat/

3. In Italy you can also travel for free if you avoid the high-speed-trains. Frequent free local trains, frequent IC trains free (but recommended to reserve for EUR 3).
Reservation possible via Trenitalia or easily at ticket vending machines or [ux]https://rail.shop/acprail/reservation[/ux]

If you tell us your travel dates and the exact places you want to travel to, it is much easier to tell you free connections without reservations. :)
Note: depending on your exact route, Eurail might not be the best choice!

If you buy Eurail, please use one of our partner links to support the free help we offer - and get free PLUS :arr: https://rail.cc/en/plus
