So according to various articles online, European nationals have been able to enter Serbia with only an ID card since June 12th 2010, but we all know it takes time to properly inform personnel about these matters and I'm not sure I should risk it... Having to take a passport with me as well (my InterRail is registered to my ID card) is a bit of a pain, but getting stuck at the border and having to pay off some corrupt border guard doesn't sound very fun either. Anyone have experience entering Serbia with an ID card?

If you are travelling abroad like with interrail it is always a good idea to have your passport

Absolutely no problems to enter Serbia or Montenegro with an (german) ID card !
The train crews know about this regulations and as well the Border Patrols.
I met very polite and friendly Serbian/ Montenegro Border Officers.

I second this, they are valid across Europe except for Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Many are also valid for Turkey
