Brief History

Railway transportation in Morocco has its roots in the second half of the 19th century. The first railroad was opened in 1872 and connected the city of Casablanca to Maarif. This greatly improved the country's transportation infrastructure.
During the French and Spanish colonial rule of Morocco in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railroad construction intensified. Colonial authorities used the railway network to transport resources, troops, and to link different regions of Morocco with European colonies.
With independence in 1956, Morocco began the process of nationalizing the railroads, and the state actively participated in the development of the industry.
Over time, the country's railway network was greatly expanded and modernized. New routes were built and existing lines were upgraded. Modern trains and technologies were introduced to improve the comfort and efficiency of passenger and freight transportation.
In November 2018, Morocco inaugurated its first high-speed line connecting Casablanca and Tangier on the fast TGV train. This project has come to symbolize the development of rail transport in the country.
Today, rail transport in Morocco continues to grow, playing an important role in connecting different regions of the country and providing efficient passenger and freight transportation.

General Information and Statistics

ONCF (from French: Office National des Chemins de Fer; Moroccan National Railways Office) is Morocco's national railway operator. In 2022, the number of passengers carried by the National Railroad Administration (ONCF) was more than 45.9 million.

The total length of the railway network in Morocco is 2109 km (2020), of which 1,022 km are electrified (48.46%).

Are trains fast in Morocco in general? How much time to cross the country?

Trains in Morocco are not generally considered high-speed compared to some other countries. However, the country is investing in modernizing its rail infrastructure, and the introduction of a high-speed train (TGV) between Casablanca and Tangier has significantly improved travel times along this route.
The journey from Guelmima to Tangier takes 19:34 hours and from Rabat Agdal to Oujda 9:02 hours.

What railway companies are available?

Other than ONCF, there are no other major railway companies operating in Morocco.

Here are the main train types available in Morocco:

Possible to buy a ticket at a railway station in Morocco?

You can buy train tickets at any train station. Just check with the staff the date/time you need and double-check that it is exactly what is printed on the tickets they will give you before you pay for them.

Can I buy my ticket by phone?

There's no such opportunity.

You may cancel tickets for travel to Morocco according to the terms and conditions:

    • Non-flexible ticket (Non-flex) - non-refundable;
    • Semi-flex (Semi-flex) - before departure, 50% of the ticket price will be refunded;
    • Flex ticket (Flex) - up to 24 hours before departure, full refund, within 24 hours before departure, 80% refund.
Only electronic tickets (e-billets) can be canceled on the official ONCF website before departure. In the case of a round-trip, connecting or multi-passenger trip, all or part of the trip can be canceled.

Train ticket prices

Train tickets for Morocco are available for purchase 3 months before your intended trip. The earlier you purchase your ticket, the more favorable fare you will be offered. The Promo Rate system offers a limited number of seats at special fares, and the availability of these seats can vary greatly depending on the train and route. Therefore, it is recommended that you book your ticket in advance to increase your chances of getting a better fare and to guarantee a seat on the train. 
For example, a ticket from Tanger to Casablanca will cost 17.80 € and from Tangera to Kentira 10.90 €

Buying tickets in advance or right before the train

Buying train tickets in advance in Morocco is generally a recommended approach, especially if you have a specific travel date and time in mind.

Types of tickets.

There are three types of Morocco train tickets:
    • Semi-Flexible Base Rate: Exchange free up to three minutes prior to train departure, refund up to 50% of cost prior to departure.
    • Flexible Rate: Exchanges unlimited times free up to three minutes before train departure, full refund up to the day before travel, 20% refund fee on the day of travel.
    • Non-Flexible Promo Rate (Non-Flexible Promo Rate): No exchange or refund options.

Fares and rates vary depending on the class (1st or 2nd), date of purchase, time and date of travel, availability of a discount card, and the level of flexibility you choose. You should choose the fare that best suits your needs and preferences.

In addition to regular tickets, Morocco offers two types of travel passes:

    • AL BORAQ DIMA: Provides unlimited rides on a selected route for a month, quarter, six months or a year. Saves up to 50% on the cost of rides, provides flexibility and free parking.

    • AL BORAQ FIFTY: Gives 50% off all rides for 3, 6 or 12 months. Includes route flexibility and free parking.

Both passes offer significant travel discounts, convenience and flexibility in route selection, making them a great value for frequent travelers and commuters.

Interrail/Eurail Passes in Morocco

Interrail/Eurail Passes are not available in Morocco.

Saver price.

Morocco trains are ticketed at an inflexible promotional fare: No exchange or refund. This is the most cost-effective fare on trains to Morocco.

Is it cheaper to buy round-trip?

Buy single tickets, not return tickets. This will give you more flexibility if you need to change your travel plans. It is not cheaper to buy return tickets.

Flexible tickets.

Morocco trains are also available with a Flexible Rate ticket: Flexible Rate: Exchange unlimited times free of charge up to three minutes before departure, full refund up to the day before travel, 20% refund fee on the day of travel.

Rules of boarding.

In addition to your train ticket, you will need an identity card or passport to prove your identity.

Discounts for group travel.

Travel in a group of 9 or more and receive a 15% discount off the prices offered on all AL BORAQ trains when the sale opens.

Age groups and discounts.

    • Children travel on AL BORAQ trains at a fixed price of €7.50 for 1st class and €4.70 for 2nd class when accompanied by an adult. Maximum of 4 children per adult. Children under 4 years of age travel free of charge if they do not occupy a separate seat.
    • Student card: 30% discount on 2nd class travel for students from 16 to 26 years old.
    • Youth Card: 15% discount on 1st and 2nd class travel for youth from 16 to 30 years old.
    • Senior Discount: 15% discount on 1st and 2nd class travel for people over 60 years old.

Age limitations for minors.

Handicapped passengers.

ONCF offers the "ACCES PMR" service to facilitate travel for people with disabilities. Includes improved facilities in stations and trains, special routes and devices on platforms, and support for customers with disabilities. The service is free of charge with a 48-hour advance reservation.

Seat reservations in trains in Morocco.

Reservation for train travel in Morocco means pre-purchasing a ticket for a guaranteed seat in 1st or 2nd class. Reservations are mandatory for certain routes such as Marrakech - Casablanca - Fes, Tangier - Fes - Oujda, Casablanca - Fes - Nador, Tangier - Marrakech, Casablanca - Oujda and on ALBORAQ trains traveling from Tangier to Casablanca.

Comfort classes on the trains.

Morocco offers two classes of comfort on ONCF trains:

    • First Class (First Class): Offers first-class amenities and excellent service, providing the most comfortable travel experience.
    • Economy Class: Offers a comfortable journey at a reasonable price, an ideal choice to immerse yourself in Morocco and enjoy the beauty of the country.

Also on overnight trains there are three options of sleeping places: single, double and up to four beds.

Food and drink in trains / train restaurant Morocco.

Al Boraq trains offer food and beverages. The menu offers various options of sandwiches, hot dishes, desserts and other snacks. You can also order hot drinks.

Night trains in Morocco?

ONCF offers long-distance overnight trains where you can sleep comfortably and wake up rested the next morning. This comfort class is available on the following routes: Casablanca - Oujda, Marrakech - Tangier, Tangier - Oujda, Casablanca - Nador.

On the Casablanca - Oujda route, ONCF offers a unique "Train + Hotel" package that includes a sleeper in an air-conditioned comfort compartment, breakfast and a travel kit.

Three sleeping arrangements are available: single, double and up to four berths.

Morocco offers several scenic train routes that are popular among tourists for their breathtaking views and cultural experiences. Some of the notable tourist/scenic train routes in Morocco include:

Luggage information.

There is no specific weight and size limit on luggage. Some first class trains have separate 6-8-seat compartments where you place your luggage on the top bunk above your seat. Some first class trains have carriages with a luggage space above your seat for hand luggage and space in the front and back of each carriage for your large bag.

Bicycle on the train.

It has to be dismounted and put in a 1.2x0.6X0.5m bag at max.

Ski or snowboard on the train.

If you have lost something on a train or at a station, don't worry! Contact ONCF via oncf2255.ma, fill out a form describing the lost item and submit the appeal. They will immediately begin a search to return your lost items to you.

Pets on the trains.

Only cats and small dogs in cages may be transported on ONCF trains. Owners of pets authorized to be transported must purchase a ticket at the "Animal" fare.
